Over the past 12 months, lockdown due to the Covid Pandemic has meant that millions of children have missed out on a large chunk of the academic year. Teachers, parents and carers across the country are aware of the impact this has had on children's academic progress.
However, the impact goes far beyond academics. Children have missed out on crucial social interactions, learning to navigate friendships, resolve conflicts, and work collaboratively with their peers.
School provides structure and routine that many children need for their emotional wellbeing. The loss of this routine has affected children's mental health, with many experiencing increased anxiety and uncertainty.
Extracurricular activities, sports days, school trips, and creative activities have all been curtailed. These experiences play a vital role in children's development, helping them discover new interests and build confidence.
As schools return to normal, it's important that we recognise the full extent of what children have missed and work to provide opportunities for recovery that go beyond academic catch-up.
